I just finished reading the book because of Winn-Dixie. It all started with this girl named Opal and she recently just moved to Florida and she has no friends and her mother left her. So, she is in a tough position right now. Until one day her father told her to go to the grocery market to get some vegetables. She went to the market and all of a sudden the manger starts screaming "Get the dog! Someone bring it to the pound!" Opal so a dog that looked like a stray dog and she sees him running across the market full speed. The dog was caught and Opal couldn't stand watching the poor dog go to the pound. So she shouted out " That is my dog! His name is a...Winn-Dixie." She had to think fast so she saw the market name Winn-Dixie she called him over and told the manger that it must of been a mistake keeping him on a leash by himself on the tree. She went home with him. Then these two twin brothers starts falling her and making fun of her and calling her names. She tried ignoring it, but she yelled at one of them calling them bald headed baby. She went home and talked to her dad (the Preacher) and convinced him on keeping a dog. Her father disagreed and said no dog. All you can hear from outside was a bang and whimper. The preacher went outside to see what was going on and found himself a dog with a smile. He told Opal to bring him back. Opal argued with him and said that he was alone and he has nowhere to go. The preacher said fine, but he will be bringing him to the pound one day. Opal said fine. The next day Opal and Winn-Dixie went to the library and got a book. The librarian was a nice lady who liked to tell stories and had her nose in her book all the time. Then there was this other lady, but a young lady around Opal's age and she was a snobby girl she always read books and doesn't like to be corrected. They rented out a book and went home. Opal needed some money for Winn-Dixie. So She saw this sign on a pet shop and the sign said help wanted. The store's name was Gertrude. She said she will work there even though she is young she said she can dust the shelves, sweep and organize the shop. Otis the boss said sure. Otis was quiet man with a guitar and a bird named Gertrude on his shoulder. He wasn't really lonely he had the animals to keep him company. Every time he played his guitar the animals were in a trance they would stay quiet and just listen to the music. Opal was walking down the street with Winn-Dixie and he went running like crazy. He ran into an old lady's backyard, her name was Gloria Dump. She was a blind lady and she spent her time in her garden, she always said to listen to the world around you. Gloria wasn't just in old lady who spent her time by herself she was sweet old lady looking for someone to talk to. Gloria was in her garden eating a peanut butter sandwich and Winn-Dixie starts eating it off of Gloria's hand. Opal was embarrassed, but Gloria didn't mind. For the past couple of weeks Gloria and Opal became closer. Then one day Gloria decided to do a party at her house and Opal would be the host of the party. Opal didn't like the sound of it, but Gloria insisted. Opal would tell Gloria everything that was happening in her life, all the problems no matter if they were good or bad. Gloria told Opal to invite Otis, the twin boys, Amanda, Gertrude, her dad, and of course Winn-Dixie. When everyone got the invitation they went to the party. Otis brought his guitar and strummed. Then all of a sudden thunder and rain started to pour hard and fast. The party was ruined, everyone had to run inside Gloria's house. Opal went inside and made sure everyone was fine, but she was missing something. She looked and hollered for Winn-Dixie. She went out in the streets looking for him screaming and crying. Her father went outside to help, but there was no sign of Winn-Dixie. The Preacher told her lets get inside before we get lose ourselves. Opal was crying and walked inside Gloria's house with tears down her face. Gloria told her don't be sad. Opal was confused and didn't understand her. Gloria was laughing and told her Winn-Dixie is fine he was the first inside and he was under my bed the whole time. Gloria found him under the bed the whole time. Everyone was laughing and Otis was strumming his guitar and everyone sang. Because of Winn-Dixie Opal made new friends.
